Imagine the following (if you want you can also try it with another person!):
You have a group of people. You pick a person you have never met before and lock eyes with her. Both of you come close and stand toe to toe while not losing sight of the other one. Don’t talk. After doing that for like minutes, each of you shares your expectations of the future and what you are afraid of. At all times, lock your eyes and stand toe to toe.
What do you think happens? How would you react being in such a situation?
Such an exercise we were supposed to do in our orientation week and it actually taught me a lot about my arrival in a new culture. I admit I felt akward staring at another person and feeling her stare at me. Coming so close to another person was intimidating and I immediately found ways to escape the akwardness. A whisper here and there, a small step back to create distance to the other person. Giving superficial answers; I won’t share my honest thoughts, how can I?
I guess, our approach to a new culture is often the same. We are forced to meet new people and things on a very close basis, look at them and have them look at us. We need to present ourselves and put our cultures and personalities out there. This is akward, and yet rewarding. Instead of seeking for ways to escape I want to learn to live with that tension in order to receive every blessing that comes with it.
And I must say, there are a lot of funny blessings! Sometimes I just have to wonder and shake my head how different Americans are. I am not judging them, different doesn’t mean better or worse. Just different. Of course, we all arrived with certain stereotypes in our heads, and some are simply true.
Here are some:
1. Americans are outgoing and very friendy- You immediately see and feel it. They open doors for you, they apologize for everything (even if they had w to do with it), they ask you lots of questions…

2. American food is greasy and very unhealty- There are about 50 different kinds of fastfood restaurants around, you can have burgers and pizzas in all kinds of varieties, they fry almost everything and put sugar in food like carrots or rice…
TRUE, but: the food also offers a great variety, so it also depends on what you choose to eat=) And many students go to the gym several times a week (including me) which makes it easier to deal with the carbs
3. American buildings are cold- the difference between outside and inside temperature is enormous. While you put on a sweater in every room, you want to throw off all your clothes as soon as you step outside. Even bathrooms have airconditioning…

4. America’s “World” ends with its own boarders- when people think that Germany is right next to Brazil, we still have the 2nd World War raging or Europe is a country, you don’t really know whether to laugh or cry…

5. Everything in America is big- I bought a shampoo bottle that will probably last for 2 years (and this was the smallest one!), a small coke would be German extralarge, their foodboxes are large and therefore their cars are even larger to load everything in it…

6. The American slang is difficult to understand- well, it depends. I definitely acquired a whole new bunch of vocab and names. In the South, everybody is “y’all, honey, darling, sweetheart, babes, sweetie” and some dialects you might find classy from the movie are actual languages…

Stell dir folgendes vor (wenn du willst, kannst du es auch gern mit einer anderen Person ausprobieren!):
Du hast eine Gruppe Leute, eine Person davon suchst du dir aus, die du noch nie getroffen hast, und schaust ihr tief in die Augen. Ihr geht auf einander zu und stellt euch Zeh-an-Zeh, während ihr euch nicht aus den Augen verliert. Ihr dürft nicht reden. Nach ca. einer Minute erzählt ihr euch gegenseitig, was ihr von der Zukunft erwartet und wovor ihr Angst habt. Die ganze Zeit über schaut ihr euch an und steht nah beieinander.
Was denkst du, passiert? Wie würdest du in so einer Situation reagieren?
In unserer Einführungswoche mussten wir so eine Übung machen und sie hat mich zum Nachdenken über mich und eine neue Kultur gebracht. Ich muss zugeben, es war sehr unangenehm, eine andere Person anzustarren und ihren Blick auf mir zu spüren. Einer fremden Person so nah zu sein war schon fast beängstigend und ich habe sofort versucht, dem auszuweichen. Mal kurz ein Flüstern, nur einen kleinen Schritt zurück, um Abstand zwischen uns zu schaffen. Lediglich oberflächlich zu antworten, wer erzählt denn schon seine tiefsten Geheimnisse? Ich denke mal, unser Herangehen an eine neue Kultur ist oft ähnlich. Wir sind gezwungen, neue Leute und Dinge kennenzulernen, näher zu kommen, sie anzugucken und uns anstarren zu lassen. Wir müssen uns selbst präsentieren, uns und unsere Kultur nach außen tragen. Das ist komisch und doch so bereichernd. Statt nur nach Auswegen zu suchen, möchte ich lernen, in dieser Spannung zu leben und allen Segen mitzukriegen, den sie mit sich bringt.
Und ich muss zugeben, es gibt ganz viele lustige Bereicherungen! Manchmal muss ich einfach nur staunen und den Kopf schütteln, wie anders die Amerikaner doch sind. Ich will nicht über sie urteilen, anders heißt weder besser noch schlechter. Eben anders. Und natürlich kommt jede mit so manchen Vorurteilen im Kopf an. Manche sind eben auch einfach wahr.
Hier sind ein paar Beispiele:
1. Amerikaner sind offen und sehr freundlich- Das merkt man sofort und spürt es vor allem. Sie öffnen dir die Tür, entschuldigen sich für alles (auch wenn sie gar nichts damit zu tun haben), fragen viel…

2. Amerikanisches Essen ist fettig und sehr ungesund- Es gibt ungefähr 50 verschiedene Fastfoodketten, Pizza und Burger gibt’s in allen Varianten, fast alles wird frittiert und überall ist Zucker drin, auch auf Karotten und Reis…
WAHR, aber: es gibt auch eine große Auswahl und man muss selbst entscheiden, was und wieviel man isst. Viele Studenten (ich auch) gehen mehrmals die Woche Sport machen und dann läuft das auch mit den Kalorien
3. Amerikanische Häuser sind kalt- der Temperaturunterschied zwischen drinnen und draußen ist enorm. Drinnen zieht man überall einen Pulli an, sobald man rausgeht, will man alles ausziehen. Sogar im Bad gibts Klimaanlagen…

4. Die “Welt” der Amerikaner endet an ihrer eigenen Grenze- Leute denken, dass Deutschland direkt neben Brasilien liegt, bei uns immer noch der 2. Weltkrieg tobt oder Europa ein Land ist. Da weiß man manchmal nicht, ob man lachen oder weinen soll…

5. Alles in Amerika ist groß- Meine Shampooflasche wird wahrscheinlich für 2 Jahre reichen (und das war noch die kleinste!), eine kleine Cola wäre in Deutschland XXL, alle Boxen sind riesig und darum sind die Autos umso größer, damit auch alles reinpasst…

6. Der amerikanische Slang ist schwer zu verstehen- kommt drauf an. Auf jeden Fall lernt man lustige Vokabeln und Namen kennen. Im Süden sind alle “Süße, Liebling, Baby, Herzchen” und so manches klingt wie aus dem Film…
