What sound does silence make?
When the noise of life suddenly stops?
When busyness comes to a halt?
When the voices of “you have to, you should, why don’t you” die down until they’re nothing more than a faraway echo?
The steady movement of my torso, lifting with the inhale, falling down with the exhale.
The distant sounds of the life surrounding me.
Trains rattling.
Cars stopping and starting.
The melody of nature.
The wind blowing softly.
Leaves falling to the ground.
The inner battle raging inside of me.
Can I really rest now?
What about all that work waiting for me?
The nagging questions, the uncomfortable feeling of waiting.
The loss of comprehension, fading into quiet surrender.
That soft whisper.
Let it wait.
Let it go.
For now, stay right here.
Welcome to the silence. What can you hear?
Writing for Five Minute Friday today.
The world is so bad about sitting in the silence. We need to remember to just be still once in awhile. Love this post!
You’re right, it’s definitely not the message the world says out loud. Thanks for coming by, Tara!
This is beautiful, Katha!
I learned, perhaps unfortunately, to see silence as a combat indicator. When the natural or cultural sounds stop, something dreadful is about to kick off.
And there I would be, in its path. I can only say that I am alive by Grace, and for a reason.

Oh wow, that must be a terrifying kind of silence!
I love the silence of nature (mostly, I’d just rather listen to the sounds of nature rather than people and their inventions 😉 ).
Definitely! What is your favorite sound out there?
Lovely Katha, as always. #14FMF
Thank you, Susan! What an encouragement!
“Welcome to the silence. What can you hear?” Thank you for this thoughtful piece!
You’re very welcome! Thank you for visiting!
Katha, your words moved me through my day until that time of peace, “Stay right there”.
Beautifully written. Glad to be your FMF neighbor today🙆
Thanks so much, Julie!
Did I tell you that my husband made a movie on this subject? It’s releasing in 33 German cities this month, actually! The pursuit of silence has been one we have been desiring for a while as a family. Check it out if you have time: http://www.pursuitofsilence.com/
No, you didn’t! But thank you, I checked it out already, really interesting! I don’t seem to be able to find up-to-date screenings…Can you tell me where in Germany it shows? Would love to see it!
lovely pictures there. silence allows us to hear so much more, doesn’t it?
YES! Thanks for coming by, Jenni!
